New research finds many more women are choosing to have both breasts removed when early stage cancer is detected in just one breast. But the study shows 10-year survival rates are not higher for those women having double mastectomy compared to women who just had the tumor removed followed by radiation. Dr. Tammy Neblock, Saint Luke's breast surgeon, says the choice for double mastectomy often comes as a result of fear of breast cancer reoccurrence, and she discusses the risks with FOX 4's Meryl Lin McKean.
