The Beacon: The State of Organ Transplants and How It Affects Missouri and Kansas

Last year, surgeons in the United States transplanted 48,000 organs, more than ever before. But critics of the country’s organ transplantation system say there should be many more. Recent efforts to reform the system aim to improve equity, access, and efficiency.

The Beacon talked with Dr. Jessica Heimes, surgical director of cardiac transplantation at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, about the coordination of heart transplants at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City.
