Robert Amajoyi, MD, has been appointed Chair of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Specialty Group of the International College of Surgeons (ICS), United States Section.

Amajoyi is a board-certified and fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon and serves as the director of the rectal cancer program at Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute. As chair, Amajoyi will lead the colon and rectal surgery specialty’s program development efforts for ICS annual meetings.

“I am excited to be a part of this great organization and humbled to be named the chair of this important specialty,” said Amajoyi. “This role will allow me to teach, mentor, and develop programs to assist other surgeons to improve their skills and to become better rectal cancer surgeons globally.”

Amajoyi says he became a surgeon because he is passionate about global health, education, and mentorship.

“The International College of Surgeons (ICS) is the most diverse surgical institution in the world with over 1000 members from over 100 countries,” said Amajoyi. “It focuses on humanitarian efforts, education, mentorship, and opportunities for leadership development both nationally and internationally. Becoming a part of ICS has allowed me to expand my network and share my rectal cancer surgical expertise globally.”

During his time as chair, Amajoyi will work to improve the quality of care for patients with rectal cancer.

“At Saint Luke’s, we practice evidence-based surgery, and the number of cases we see make us leaders in the rectal cancer surgical field,” said Amajoyi. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with thought leaders and experts within this field to find ways that we can continue to reduce the morbidity and recurrence rate of this complex surgical problem.”

Amajoyi’s appointment will renew on an annual basis.
