Mid America Heart & Lung Surgeons Summer Student Scholars Program

The Mid America Heart & Lung Surgeons summer student scholars program take place each summer and provides incoming high school seniors and college students (freshmen, sophomores, or juniors) with an interest in the medical field an opportunity to spend six weeks at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City observing cardiac surgery and cardiology clinical services.

The 2025 program is scheduled for Monday, June 6–Friday, July 25, with a brief break from June 30–July 4. Accepted students must attend a mandatory orientation and Basic Life Support course on Friday, June 6 to review important policies and procedures associated with working in and around the hospital. The course runs 40 hours a week, Monday–Friday. Students who successfully complete the six-week program receive a $2,500 stipend.

Student scholars will spend six weeks shadowing cardiovascular surgeons, researchers, anesthesiologists, critical care physicians, and other collaborative departments.

Qualifications

Interested students must be either an incoming senior in high school or must be pursuing undergraduate education, and be in good standing at school.

  1. Accepted students are expected to:
    1. Complete a Saint Luke’s Hospital confidentiality agreement.
    2. Take a tuberculosis (TB) test within 30 days of the start date.
    3. Show Hepatitis B documentation of vaccination, take a vaccination at the time of their appointment with Employee Health, or sign a declination agreement.
    4. Dress appropriately for their area of work and be punctual.
    5. Submit a summary of their experience within two weeks of completing the program.

All of the above requirements must be met a minimum of three days before the start of the program. Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification from the summer scholars program.
