Urinalysis, Routine, Random Urine (With Reflex to Microscopic if Indicated)

Preferred Volume:
20 mL urine container; 8 mL tiger top urine tube; 4 mL gray top urine tube
Collection Procedure:

Instructions To Transfer Urine Specimen Into Tiger Top and Gray Top Evacuated Tubes Using BD Vacutainer® Urine Transfer Straw:
1. Place the urine cup on a clean, flat surface.
2. Place the tip of the transfer straw into the urine specimen.  The urine cup may be tipped at an angle if the volume of urine is limited.
3. Place the evacuated gray top tube into the holder, stopper down.  Advance the tube over the puncture point to pierce the stopper.
4. Hold the tube in position until filled.
5. Remove the tube from the holder.
6. Mix the tube 8 - 10 times by inversion.
7. Repeat the above steps for the tiger top tube.
8. Lift the transfer straw from the cup and allow the specimen to drain.  Discard the transfer straw in a biohazard container approved for sharps disposal.
9. Label the tiger top tube, gray top tube and urine cup with two patient identifiers for transport to the laboratory.

Store and Transport:
Cup - Refrigerate and send on ice
Tiger and Gray tubes - Room temperature
Stability:

The tiger top tube is stable at room temperature for 72 hours.
The gray top tube is stable at room temperature for 48 hours.
The cup is stable at 2 - 8 °C for 24 hours.

A microscopic analysis will only be performed if any of the following results are obtained on the urinalysis: HGB ≥ Small; Protein ≥ 100 mg/dL; Leukocyte esterase - Positive; Nitrite - Positive
Reference Ranges:

Appearance: Colorless, Yellow, Dark Yellow

Glucose: Negative

Bilirubin: Negative

Ketones: Negative


Specific gravity: >1.005 - <1.030

Hemoglobin: Negative

pH: 5.0 - 8.0

Protein: Negative

Urobilinogen: Normal

Nitrite: Negative


Leukocyte esterase: Negative
