Collection Procedure:

On collection of a random urine, it is advisable to not use the first voided morning specimen, the late evening specimen after 8 pm, or the specimen obtained following excessive fluid intake.

Specimen Processing:

1. Transfer the urine to an amber plastic transport tube with amber screw cap.
2. Label the container with the patient's name and date.
3. The specimen should be frozen immediately and maintained frozen until testing.
4. If an amber tube and cap are not available, cover a clear plastic transport tube completely from the top to bottom with aluminum foil. Label both the transport tube and the aluminum foil with the patient's name. Secure with tape. 
5. Submit separate frozen samples for each test requested.

Random urine collection preserved with 30% Glacial Acetic Acid:
Frozen - 30 days
Refrigerated - 24 hours

Unacceptable Condition:

Specimens exposed to light or specimens not frozen when received at the testing laboratory will be rejected.
