Specimen Processing:

1. The serum or plasma must be separated from the cells within 2 hours of collection.
2. Serum and plasma specimens can be sent and received at room temperature for up to 8 hours.
3. Specimens that will take longer than 8 hours to arrive at testing laboratory, follow instructions below.
         a. Serum samples - transfer into a screw-capped, plastic vial and send frozen.
         b. Plasma samples  - store and send refrigerated, do not freeze. Stable for 3 days 
             refrigerated.

Stability:

Serum: Frozen (up to 1 month); Refrigerated and Room Temp (up to 8 hours)
Heparin Plasma: Refrigerated (up to 3 days); Room Temp (up to 8 hours); Frozen is unacceptable

Notes:

High serum biotin levels may interfere with this assay and result in a false decrease in values. A repeat test 24 – 48 hours after stopping oral biotin may be requested.
