Specimen Processing:

1. Transfer the urine to an amber plastic transport tube with amber cap.
2. If amber transport tubes are unavailable, cover the transport tube completely, top and bottom, with aluminum foil.
3. Identify the patient's name and date directly on the amber transport tube and the outside of the aluminum foil.  Secure with tape.
4. The specimen must be kept refrigerated during transport.

Refrigerated and protected from light
Stability:

Frozen - 14 days
Refrigerated - 7 days
Room temperature - unstable

Unacceptable Condition:

Room temperature specimens are unacceptable as are specimens exposed to light or specimens containing acid preservative.
