Patient Preparation:

1. A 12 hour fasting specimen is preferred, but not required.
2. The patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection.
3. The patient should be off medication for at least one week prior to collection.
4. If clinically inappropriate to discontinue medications, include a list of medications with the specimen.

Green top (sodium or lithium heparin) tube (NO GEL TUBES)

Plasma

Preferred Volume:
3 mL
Minimum Volume:
1 mL
Specimen Processing:

1. Protect the plasma from light.
2. The plasma should be separated from the cells within 2 hours of collection.
3. Transfer the plasma to a plastic transport tube.

Frozen
Stability:

Frozen - 8 weeks

Unacceptable Condition:

Gel tubes are not allowed.
