About Ryan W. Swope
Ryan W. Swope, DO, FAAOS, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists specializing in hip and knee replacements, including revision hip and knee surgery.
Dr. Swope specializes in the direct anterior approach for hip replacement and revisions. This minimally invasive approach does not involve cutting any muscles to access the hip joint and is preferred by many patients for its lower risk of dislocation and faster recovery time.
Dr. Swope also specializes in robotic total knee replacement, which allows for greater surgical precision and more personalized knee replacement. It is also shown to lead to less postoperative pain, faster recovery times, and a more natural-feeling joint.
Dr. Swope previously served the United States Air Force for 13 years as an orthopedic trauma surgeon in active duty. His military career included eight years in the Air National Guard in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Missouri; multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq; and the opportunity to serve on the presidential emergency surgical team for President Barack Obama during a visit to Kotzebue, Alaska. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in July 2024 after 21 years of service.
When Dr. Swope is not caring for patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and watching his two daughters compete in gymnastics. An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies include camping, woodworking, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and motorsports.

Dr. Swope is one of the best surgeons I know. I had a wonderful experience with my knee replacement. He was very considerate In explaining things. His bed side manner goes above and beyond most surgeons. He explained thing very well. Made me very at easy with having the surgery. He is an all around good person and doctor. I give his name out to anyone I know needs knee surgery.
