When adults lose bone density, a condition commonly referred to as osteopenia, it can be contributed to aging or complications from other medical conditions. In either case, it may be indicative of an increased risk of other associated low-bone density conditions, or even an increased vulnerability to fractures. Saint Luke's uses bone density scans to help monitor overall bone density and manage potential breaks and other conditions associated with lower bone density.

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes weak, thinning bones. This puts the bones at greater risk of breaking. The bones most often affected are the hips, spine, and wrists.
