On the day of her heart surgery at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Katie Edwards, 29, remembers that she and her husband, Will, were prepared to hear some difficult news.

When Maribeth Kammert first learned she had cancer in 2015, her world came to a stop. It was early stage breast cancer. “I was at Beauty Brands with my mom when I got the call. I went into the bathroom because I didn’t know how I would react. I didn’t cry,” said Maribeth. “I just had this instinct that I was going to take care of it, and God was going to take care of me. And if the outcome wasn’t what I wanted, I’d be okay with that.”

This past March, Dorothy Esser, 71, had a casual phone conversation with a friend. About 15 minutes later, her vision started to blur and her legs felt weak. Dorothy was active and hadn’t had significant health concerns, so this feeling was out of the ordinary.

For three decades, breathing troubles followed James Seymore as he and his wife moved from one place to another. In 1980, he received his first diagnosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis in Wyoming. The inflammatory condition can cause shortness of breath, coughing, fatigue, and joint pain. His first bout resolved after a course of steroids, but it returned seven years later after the Seymores moved to Oregon.
