Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisory Residency (ACPE Certified Educator Program)

Supervisory/Certified Education Residency is an accredited program that teaches the art of Clinical Pastoral Supervision/Education. Students learn the theory and practice of supervision and experience by supervising internship and residency students under the guidance and consultation of a CPE certified educator/supervisor.

Once an applicant has been admitted, they have three years to complete the certification process for the Associate Certification Educator level. Supervisory/Certified Education Residency is an annual appointment based on assessed performance, with the option for a fourth year as approved by Saint Luke’s CPE faculty. Supervisory/Certified Education Residency is initiated when a position is available; the training year begins at the date of hire.

Program Learning and Service Expectations

During this time, the Certified Education Student (CES) prepares with the primary certified educator/supervisor and faculty for the required admission/readiness (Aspirant) and works as chaplain in the department.

Objectives:

  • Learn the culture of Saint Luke’s Health System
  • Learn about and integrate into the Spiritual Wellness Department and its operations
  • Assess pastoral/spiritual identity and practice (Level II ACPE outcomes and certified education competencies)
  • Give CES and Certified Educator/Supervisor time to work together and assess fit
  • Map learning intentions and expected outcomes and competencies
  • Provide time and consultation on preparations for readiness
  • Reading in CPE supervision/education, for example, ACPE History, Standards and  Competencies
  • Join and participate in CES peer group(s)

Observation

Objectives:

  • Gain experience by observation of and reflection with the program supervisor
  • Prepare materials for Phase I of the new ACPE certification 
  • Complete preparation for theory and practice integration 
  • Develop, with the program educator/supervisor, a reading and writing program in order to explore content and theory areas related to the practice of CPE supervision/education

Education

Objectives:

  • Provide one-to-one and group supervision under supervision ACPE certified educator
  • Co-lead seminars and CPE units with program certified educator
  • Coordinate certain program elements to gain experience in program planning and management

Working through Certified Education Candidacy

During the periods of Phase I & II, the candidate will plan and conduct CPE units with interns or residents. The certified education candidate (CEC) will maintain a regular schedule of supervision with his/her primary certified educator.

Objectives:

  • Supervise CPE units of interns or residents under supervision of an ACPE Certified Educator
  • Prepare presentation of a CPE unit with supporting materials for appropriate, ACPE certification committee(s) 

Admission Requirements

Saint Luke’s Clinical Pastoral Education programs follow the standards and guidelines of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.

To be considered for admission to the CPE programs applicants must:

  • Complete the Saint Luke’s CPE program application materials
  • Hold a master’s of divinity or equivalent
  • Be ordained/licensed and endorsed by her/his faith group
  • Interview with an admission’s committee consisting of members from Saint Luke’s and ACPE
  • Have previous ministry experience in which the applicant demonstrated ability to function pastorally
  • Successfully meet CPE Level II outcomes as documented in the certified educator’s final evaluation or assessed in the admission consultation
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the Spiritual Care Collaborative Common Standards for Professional Chaplaincy. Note: The ACPE Standards and Code of Ethics supersede these standards
  • Participate in an admission interview on site and later with a committee of ACPE and Saint Luke’s CPE faculty members
  • Consult with the supervisor/ certified educator and ACPE as specified in the ACPE New Certification Manual
  • Maintain current ACPE membership

    • The CEC is considered an employee of Saint Luke’s Health System by the IRS and considered self-employed by Social Security.
    • If applicable, the CEC may request an IRS housing allowance designation.
