In 2018, 59-year-old Crisann Surrena was in the middle of a big life change. After a fainting spell, Angela Alvarez was ultimately diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Her original plan of action was to undergo a heart transplant, but she sought a second opinion at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.

In 2017, Charles Koslowsky, 70, learned he had a rare form of pancreatic cancer. It had metastasized to his liver.
