Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship APPE

The Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial and Diagnostic Advisement Program (ID/ADAP) rotation is a four-week elective rotation for pharmacy students at Saint Luke’s Hospital, within Saint Luke’s Health System. The rotation will be split into two-week blocks: Two weeks will be spent rounding with the ID service and the other two with the ADAP pharmacist.

The pharmacy student will be expected to communicate pertinent ID information with other health care teams to optimize patient care. Assistance in updating ID relevant monitoring notes in the pharmacy computer system is expected by the end of the working day.

The pharmacy student will be responsible for recognizing and resolving antimicrobial and other pertinent medication therapy issues for all patients seen by the ID team or upon prospective audit as determined by the ADAP pharmacist. These medications include but are not limited to antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, and antiretroviral therapies. The student will be expected to evaluate all patients on antimicrobial regimens, take the lead, when appropriate, during ID rounds with our ID specialist team, spend time in the microbiology lab, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors. Additionally, the resident will complete a project and/or presentation related to an ID topic of interest or based on need.

The goal of the rotation is to provide the student with a general understanding of appropriate antimicrobial therapies and clinical tests, labs, etc., which assist pharmacists in guiding antimicrobial treatment regimens. A successful rotation is highly dependent on the work ethic, motivation, and time management put forth by the student and good communication skills are essential.
