Kansas City Business Journal: Extending health care: Providers deliver care closer to the patients

Consumer-driven care continues to push satellite emergency departments outward from their mother-ship hospitals, with several health systems offering a mixture of remote ERs and local specialty clinics to meet this need.

A new concept takes that even further: Overland Park residents will be the first to see a “whole group” of facilities called micro-hospitals in the next few years, said Dr. Melinda Estes, CEO of Saint Luke’s Health System.

Micro-hospitals are just what they sound like: smaller versions of full-service hospitals that include beds for admissions, trauma care, diagnostics and other services. One key distinction these closer facilities tout: shorter waits.
