About Paul Chan, MD
Dr. Chan was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 6. As a child growing up in the tenement projects of the lower East side of New York City, he experienced first-hand the struggles of the poor. As a result, Dr. Chan's life mission has been to dedicate his work and family life to service.
After completing his schooling at a public high school, Dr. Chan enrolled at Harvard University, where he completed a joint degree in Chemistry and Religious Studies. He then went on to do two years of volunteer work teaching of high school drop-outs in Appalachian Kentucky and then as a non-profit lobbyist for hunger legislation with "˜Bread for the World' in Washington, D.C. After these experiences, Dr. Chan completed a medical degree at Johns Hopkins Medical School and then went on to be jointly trained as an internist and pediatrician at the Harvard Medical School hospitals (Brigham and Women's and Boston Children's Hospitals). After completing his residency, he worked in the underserved Navajo reservation in northwest Arizona for 4 years as a primary care physician before resuming his training at the University of Michigan, where he completed a Masters in Biostatistics and an adult cardiovascular medicine fellowship.
Dr. Chan spends most of his time conducting clinical research. He has over 300 peer-reviewed publications, serves on multiple national committees for the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, and is internationally renowned for his work on cardiac arrest, quality and appropriateness of care, and disparities in care. He has a particular interest in studying the care of traditionally vulnerable populations (e.g., minorities, uninsured patients). He also spends time as a general cardiologist. Dr. Chan has received numerous awards for his research.
Dr. Chan spends much of his free time outside the hospital working on health and development projects in under developed countries. He has travelled to Central America nearly twenty times, has been the president of the Board of Directors of a Guatemalan non-governmental health and development organization (Behrhorst Partners for Development), and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Church World Service - an organization focused on refugee relief and resettlement, food assistance programs, and sustainable health and development programs in resource-poor countries. Dr. Chan has run an annual fundraiser hike in the Grand Canyon since 2010, and has raised nearly $2 million to support the work of Church World Service.

Reviews & Ratings
Recent Patient Reviews
The Patient Satisfaction Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown below from our survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question.
We refer to Saint Luke’s providers as well as independent providers credentialed at a Saint Luke’s facility. Providers make no payments for these referrals and our selections are based on your needs and preferences.
