Billing
Saint Luke’s Health System charges are based upon the services patients receive and length of stay, as applicable. Patients are charged for their room on admission day, but there is no charge for the patient's room on the day of discharge.
Hospital charges do not include attending physician’s fees, the fees of other consulting physicians, or the fees of specialists who interpret tests. These physicians will bill patients separately.
In emergency situations, we always provide care first. We will discuss bill payment later.
Online bill payment is available through the mySaintLuke’s patient portal and guest pay.

Provider-Based Clinics and Billing
Some Saint Luke’s Health System clinics are operated as outpatient departments of one of our metropolitan or regional hospitals. Services delivered in hospital outpatient departments—referred to as provider-based clinics—are billed differently than in a traditional doctor’s office.
What does “provider-based clinic” mean?
Provider-based clinics (also known as “hospital-based” or “hospital outpatient” clinics) are departments of a hospital. Clinics located miles away from a hospital campus may still be considered part of that hospital.
When you see a physician or advanced practice provider, or receive other health care services (such as labs, imaging, and other diagnostic testing) in a provider-based clinic, you are being treated in a hospital department rather than a traditional physician’s office.
The provider-based clinic structure aligns clinics and services closer with the hospital, which enhances quality and safety standards and makes care more consistent. Hospital clinics are subject to stricter government rules, and higher quality and accreditation standards—including that of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission.
Patients benefit from the additional and shared resources and clinical integration at provider-based clinics.
Are services at hospital-based clinics billed differently?
We provide patients with a single bill rather than multiple bills for hospital, clinic visits, and Saint Luke’s provider services.
There are a few occasions where patients will still receive a separate bill. If you received a separate bill related to your visit, you are responsible for paying that bill as well.
How does provider-based billing affect patients with Medicare or Medicaid?
Medicare and Medicaid patients will receive one bill for services provided in the clinic.
Patients will be responsible for any copays, co-insurance, or deductibles as outlined in their plan.
How does provider-based billing affect patients with other health insurance?
Insurance carriers who have a contract with Saint Luke’s may not require the same billing process as Medicare or Medicaid. You may not incur additional expenses, but you should check with your insurance provider. It’s important to ask your insurance company these questions:
- Does my health insurance benefit plan cover hospital charges in a hospital-based outpatient clinic?
- How much of the charge is covered?
- How much will be applied to the deductible?
- How much will I owe (co-insurance) after meeting the deductible?
- What if I have secondary insurance coverage?
Co-insurance and deductibles may be covered by a secondary insurance. Check with your health insurance company for details.

Patient Refunds
After you’ve paid your bill, you may receive a refund stating that you overpaid. This occurs when your health insurance covers more than the initial estimate.
Recipient Select
Saint Luke’s has partnered with Bank of America to offer you faster access and more options to claim your refund rather than receiving a check by mail. Through a program called Recipient Select, patients can choose their preferred payment method via a secure web portal. Patients can choose to receive their refund by check, debit card, bank transfers, PayPal or Zelle.
Patients who qualify for this option will receive a single email from Saint Luke’s and Bank of America with a link to the portal and sign-up instructions. Sign-up is completely optional. Patients will have five days from the date of the email to complete the selection. If not completed within five days, patients will receive a check by mail.
Recipient Select Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Good Faith Estimates
Patients have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate, which explains how much medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers must give patients without insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. For questions or more information about rights to a Good Faith Estimate, visit cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
Patients who believe they have been mistakenly billed may contact Saint Luke’s Health System Customer Service at 816-932-5678.
