The summer student scholars programs take place each summer and provides outstanding college students (incoming Juniors and Seniors) with an interest in medicine an opportunity to spend six weeks at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City participating either in an ongoing research project or six different clinical services for a week at a time.

The 2024 programs are scheduled for Monday, June 10 – Friday, July 26, with a brief break from July 1 – July 5. Accepted students must attend a mandatory orientation and Basic Life Support course Friday, June 7 to review important policies and procedures associated with working in and around the hospital. The course runs 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday. Students who successfully complete the six-week program receive a $2,500 stipend.

Available Programs

Research Project

Students who opt for this program will be assigned to an ongoing research project and will spend the duration of their time assisting investigators and staff learning about research design, grant writing, funding, and budgeting. They will help with data procurement and data entry.

Clinical Services

Students interested in the program will be assigned to six rotations from a group of clinical services. Each rotation provides students with an opportunity to work with attending physicians, residents, medical students, and patients. Each service will have a unique structure providing a diverse experience for the student.

Qualifications

Interested students must have completed two years of undergraduate college, be in good standing at their college or university, and have an interest in pursuing a career in medicine.

Accepted students are expected to:

  • Complete a Saint Luke's Hospital Confidentiality Agreement
  • Take a TB test within 30 days of the start date
  • Show immunity to MMR and Varicella or take a vaccination at the time of their appointment with Employee Health
  • Show Hepatitis B documentation of vaccination, take a vaccination at the time of their appointment with Employee Health, or sign a declination agreement
  • Dress appropriately for their area of work and be punctual
  • Submit a summary of their experience within two weeks of completing the program

All of the above requirements must be met a minimum of three days before the start of the program. Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification from the Summer Scholars Programs.
