What is PLUVICTO?
PLUVICTO is the first FDA-approved targeted therapy to treat certain types of advanced prostate cancer while protecting healthy tissues. It is designed for patients whose cancer cells express PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen), a protein commonly found in high amounts of prostate cancer cells.
How does PLUVICTO work?
PLUVICTO is a two-part drug that combines:
- A molecule that seeks out and binds to PSMA-positive prostate cancer cells
- A radioactive isotope (lutetium-177) that kills the cancer cells with radiation
Unlike traditional chemotherapy, PLUVICTO is a targeted treatment that kills cancer-positive cells while limiting damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It is administered by intravenous infusion and is typically given every six weeks for up to six treatments, depending on patient response and side effects. PLUVICTO is not a cure for prostate cancer, but it can alleviate side effects and give patients a better quality of life.
