What is LUTATHERA?

LUTATHERA is an FDA-approved radioisotope therapy that delivers targeted treatment for somatostatin receptor-positive gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs), a rare type of cancer that develops in neuroendocrine cells throughout the digestive system. Where traditional radiation therapy delivers radiation from outside the body, LUTATHERA seeks out cancer cells from inside the body and delivers targeted radiation to attack them—without harming healthy tissue.

How does LUTATHERA work?

LUTATHERA is a two-part drug that combines:

  • A molecule that seeks out and binds to somatostatin receptors found on neuroendocrine tumors
  • A radioactive isotope (lutetium-177) that kills the cancer cells with radiation

Traditional chemotherapy circulates throughout the body and affects both cancerous and healthy cells. Radioisotope therapies like LUTATHERA act as a heat-seeking missile to bring radiation directly to cancer-causing cells. This allows for more targeted cancer treatment that maximizes results while reducing unnecessary radiation to normal tissues.
