Keely Bechtel hoped history would repeat itself. She had her first baby at Saint Luke’s South Hospital and planned to do the same with her second. But her obstetrician moved to another area hospital.

When Chelsey and Jeremy Heston were expecting their fourth child, they didn’t know if it was going to be a blue or pink surprise, but they did know they would be going to Saint Luke’s. 

In 2018, 59-year-old Crisann Surrena was in the middle of a big life change. She was preparing to move from Louisiana to Texas and was on the road when she began having trouble breathing, setting off a chain of events that would eventually bring her all the way to Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. 

The Barnes family shares their NICU journey, and a NICU nurse spoke with KCTV about how special this event is for them.

The four-year observational study will research U.S. pregnant people with cardiovascular disease to better understand and combat maternal mortality and morbidity.

These NICU nurses get to not only experience taking care and helping the most fragile babies and their families, but they are also blessed to experience pregnancy together.

Richard Nolan, a 74-year-old from Kansas City, Missouri, is a longtime patient at Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants. Over the years, he has been treated for claudication, a painful condition caused by reduced blood flow to the calf muscles during exercise. But when his symptoms worsened in July 2025, he was scheduled for surgery at Saint Luke’s East Hospital.
