For National Trauma Survivors Day, Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City honored local trauma survivors and their trauma team by hosting an event allowing everyone to reunite.

After a fainting spell, Angela Alvarez was ultimately diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Her original plan of action was to undergo a heart transplant, but she sought a second opinion at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.

Ileana Avalos had been through this once before. In 2003, she was 23 and just two years into her career as a scheduling assistant at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. She was also pregnant with her first child, but a severe case of eclampsia left her with scar tissue on her right kidney and in need of a kidney transplant.
