Saint Luke’s recognized on U.S. News and World Report’s 2021-2022 Best Hospitals List

U.S News and World Report announced their 2021-2022 Best Hospital rankings. The rankings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City ranks No. 2 in Missouri, No. 2 in the Kansas City metro area and is recognized among the Best Hospitals in northwestern Missouri.

“It is such an honor to again be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as providing some of the best care in the nation,” said Julie Quirin, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Saint Luke’s Health System. “This recognition illustrates the commitment and dedication of our Saint Luke’s physicians and nurses and other professionals who bring the highest level of care to patients in our community.”

U.S. News and World Report also closely evaluates and ranks specialized services. Saint Luke’s Cardiology and Heart Surgery specialty was nationally-ranked no. 25.

“We take tremendous pride in providing the most comprehensive cardiovascular care in Kansas City,” said Dr. Michael Main, Co-Medical Director of Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. “Being ranked among the top 25 heart programs in the nation is an honor we do not take for granted. This ranking speaks volumes to the expertise, collaboration, and compassionate care we provide our patients.”

For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

“This year’s expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”

Saint Luke’s Hospital ranks as high performing in six specialty areas:

  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
  • Geriatrics
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Pulmonology & Lung Surgery
  • Urology

The following specialties were rated at Saint Luke’s Hospital as high performing in Common Adult Procedure and Conditions:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Aortic Valve surgery
  • Back surgery (spinal fusion)
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Heart attack
  • Heart bypass surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Hip fracture
  • Kidney failure
  • Lung cancer surgery
  • Stroke
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

Saint Luke’s East Hospital was rated high performing in the following common Adult Procedure and Conditions:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Heart failure
  • Hip fracture
  • Kidney failure
  • Knee replacement
  • Stroke

Saint Luke’s South Hospital was rated high performing in the following common Adult Procedure and Conditions:

  • Heart failure
  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement

Saint Luke’s North Hospital was rated high performing in the following common Adult Procedure and Conditions:

  • Heart failure

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
