FOX4: Saint Luke's Celebrates 135 Years of Delivering Babies with Kansas City Eras

Saint Luke’s has been delivering babies since 1889, that’s 135 years of maternity care and the longest running maternity service in Kansas City. To honor this anniversary, we are taking a look back at Kansas City through the decades.

We are proud that families have trusted us for their care and to have served our community’s littlest patients and their families for more than 135 years. We enlisted the help of babies born at Saint Luke’s to help us take a look back at what was going on in Kansas City over the past 13 decades.

The 12 costumes represent the following: 

  • Newsie Era - Newsboy - Kansas City Star put out its first edition in 1880.
  • Cowboy Era – Cowboys – Cowtown welcomed the first American Royal in 1890.
  • Adventure Era - Zookeeper- Kansas City Zoo opened in 1990 and has been enjoyed by millions of Kansas City kids.
  • Baseball Era – Baseball player - The Negro Leagues’ most prominent team, KC Monarchs, got their start in 1920.
  • Roaring Twenties Era - Kansas Citians enjoyed the flapper fashion.
  • Art Era - Artist - The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art opened in 1933.
  • Sock Hop Era - Poodle skirts and Elvis were all the rage with teenage girls in the 1950s.
  • Groovy Era - In 1970, it was an era of groovy clothes and music in Kansas City.
  • Jazzercise Era - Outfits were bright and hair was big around Kansas City in the 1980s.
  • BBQ Era - The abundance of high-quality beef in Cowtown has made Kansas City synonymous with BBQ
  • Jazz Era - Jazz in Kansas City was born in the 1920s and flourished in the 18th & Vine district.
  • Champion Era - Since moving to Kansas City in 1963, the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls and counting.
