Stop the Bleed

Death from bleeding can occur in minutes, but so can saving a life. Stop the Bleed is a 90-minute class that teaches participants to carry out a few simple life-saving techniques that make up the basics of emergency, on-the-spot care, including:

  • Direct pressure
  • Wound packing
  • Tourniquet use

An initiative from the American College of Surgeons, Stop the Bleed strives to create a national policy to improve survival rates after intentional mass-casualty events.

Stepping On

Falls are the leading cause of accidental death in older adults, and more than a third of older adults will experience a fall in the next 12 months. However, the Stepping On program has proven to reduce falls by more than 30%. Over seven weekly, two-hour sessions, we explore:

  • Exercises to improve strength and balance
  • Creating a safe home environment
  • Managing a fall if one does occur
  • Medication management and vision checks
  • Group discussions to share experiences and strategies

Rural Trauma Team Development

Rural areas have a high rate of trauma deaths. Resources can be limited, and responses and transfers to higher-level trauma centers take precious time. Saint Luke’s one-day Rural Trauma Team Development Course prepares personnel at all stages—from the ambulance to the emergency room—to help them provide effective trauma care, reduce transfer times, and save lives.

Class members participate in interactive lectures and hands-on scenarios to learn how to:

  • Form a rural trauma team
  • Equip a rural hospital for trauma care
  • Provide immediate resuscitation and assessment
  • Initiate transfers early and decrease time spent in the Emergency Department
  • Understand local resources and limitations
  • Work with the larger regional trauma system
  • Evaluate and improve performance
