LSVT® Therapy
What is LSVT® Therapies?
Saint Luke’s speech, occupational, and physical therapists utilize LSVT® LOUD and LSVT® BIG.
These evidence-based rehabilitation programs help improve voice quality and projection, as well as balance and motor control, for patients with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions.
LSVT® LOUD
Nearly 90 percent of patients who suffer from Parkinson’s disease experience speech problems. These typically start early in the disease process and progressively worsen.
LSVT® LOUD can help patients improve their oral communication skills by focusing on vocal loudness, intonation, and quality.
Saint Luke’s speech therapists help patients with such common problems as:
- Soft voice
- Hoarse voice
- Mumbled speech
- Monotone speech
LSVT® LOUD exercises stimulate muscles in the voice box (larynx) to improve patients’ respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory function. As a result, patients are able to bring their voices to a healthy loudness without strain.
After undergoing 16 therapy sessions, patients typically improve their:
- Vocal loudness
- Speech intelligibility
- Facial expressions
- Confidence
LSVT® BIG
This whole-body therapy program helps patients with movement and sensory-motor function impairments caused by Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions.
Our physical and occupational therapists show patients how to use bigger movements to improve their:
- Trunk rotation
- Gait speed and stride length
- Performance of everyday activities
- Balance
- Ability to get up from chairs or other surfaces
Through this training, patients learn how to “recalibrate” their movement to a more normal amplitude and speed. This helps patients regain confidence while walking or performing other everyday activities.
After undergoing 16 intensive therapy sessions, patients typically:
- Walk faster with bigger steps
- Improve their balance
- Increase their trunk rotation
Both LSVT® LOUD and LSVT® BIG programs are covered by insurance and Medicare.
