Fast Breast MRI

A Fast Breast MRI (also referred to as Abbreviated Breast MRI) is a screening exam used to supplement annual mammography. The exam is recommended for women with dense breast tissue because it finds more cancers than mammography finds alone. The Fast Breast MRI should not replace annual mammograms.

Who should get a Fast Breast MRI?

Patients with dense breast tissue
Patients who have had a negative mammogram within the last 12 months
Patients at average or intermediate risk for breast cancer

Patients at high risk should continue getting yearly screening mammograms and traditional breast MRIs.

Is a physician’s referral needed?

Patients need an order from a physician. Patients should talk to their doctor about whether a Fast Breast MRI is the right screening option for them. Results are shared with the referring provider.

How does a Fast Breast MRI work?

The Fast Breast MRI takes less than half the time of a traditional MRI. During the examination, the technologist will take an initial set of scans and then use an IV (in the elbow, hand, or wrist) to inject a contrast agent or dye before taking another set of scans.

If a Fast Breast MRI is performed, is a mammogram still needed?

Yes. Annual mammograms monitor changes from year-to-year and detect some cancers that are not seen with MRI.

Will additional testing be needed?

Findings on the Fast Breast MRI may lead to additional tests such as an ultrasound and/or a biopsy.

Are patients exposed to radiation during the Fast Breast MRI?

The Fast Breast MRI does not release radiation. It uses radio waves and a non-invasive magnetic field.

What if a patient is claustrophobic and fearful of small spaces?

Patients who dislike small spaces or have difficulty lying on their stomachs for an extended time can ask a health care provider to prescribe a sedative to keep them calm during the exam.
