Cardio-Oncology

Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute cardiologists offer personalized cardio-oncology care. Our experts diagnose and treat heart conditions in patients who have been or are being treated for cancer.

Some cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation to the chest, can affect a patient’s cardiovascular system. Our physicians use diagnostic testing, medical management, and interventional and surgical procedures to prevent and treat cardiovascular issues, including:

  • Arrhythmias
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure

The cardiologists work closely with oncologists at Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute to limit damage to the cardiovascular system during treatment and to improve the quality of life of patients with cancer.

Cardiovascular Symptoms

Many symptoms experienced during cancer treatments also may be associated with a decrease in heart function. Some possible indications of heart problems:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath while walking or at rest
  • Waking up short of breath
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Chest discomfort including dull or sharp pain, tightness, or pressure
  • Heart palpitations

If evaluation shows a change in heart function, the patient may be started on medications that protect the heart and help improve heart function.

If you are undergoing or have undergone cancer treatment, talk to your oncologist about a referral to cardio-oncology.

Refer a patient by calling 816-931-1883.
