Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery

Your doctor may recommend minimally invasive, or laparoscopic surgery, depending on your condition.

How it works

During a minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon makes one or more small incisions—usually about a half-inch long—and inserts a tube through which the doctor can insert cameras and specially designed instruments to perform the surgery.

Compared to traditional open surgery, patients who undergo minimally invasive surgery often experience:

• Faster recovery

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery utilizes state-of-the-future technology to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures and provides many benefits to patients, including reduced blood loss, quicker recovery, and less postoperative pain and discomfort. It also delivers increased clinical capability while maintaining the same look and feel of open surgery.

How it works

Using the da Vinci Surgical System®, the surgeon operates while seated comfortably at a console viewing a 3-D image of the surgical field. Similar to traditional minimally invasive surgery, small incisions are made, and the surgeon places tubes in each incision. The da Vinci’s patient-side cart has three or four robotic arms that are used to place cameras and surgical instruments in these tubes.

Using the system’s master controls, the surgeon's hand, wrist, and finger movements are translated into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient. The instruments are designed with seven degrees of motion that mimic the dexterity of the human hand and wrist.

The vision system, with a high-resolution 3-D endoscope and image processing equipment, provides a true-to-life 3-D image of the operative field. These images can be enhanced, refined, and optimized using the system’s image synchronizers, high-intensity illuminators, and camera control units.
