When pain lasts for a long period of time—for at least three months—it is considered chronic pain. This includes pain that you feel regularly, but not necessarily all the time. Chronic pain may be a result of a lingering injury or disease. 

Examples of chronic pain include:

• Nervous system damage (neuropathic pain)
• Headaches

Acute pain is sudden pain caused by an underlying issue. Once the source of the pain is healed, the pain usually goes away. 

Examples of acute pain include:

• Broken bones
• Wounds
• Childbirth
• Surgery
