The specialized residency in health system pharmacy administration is an organized, directed postgraduate program of practical experience in pharmacy practice administration. The program is 12 months in length and designed to progress a resident through the development of increasingly complex competencies in pharmacy practice and practice management.
The primary objective of the program is to prepare pharmacists to assume leadership positions in integrated health care systems. Graduates of the program will have a higher level of competency in assessing and resolving the health needs of the public as it relates to the safe and effective use of medication and will be expected to assume a leadership role in pharmacy practice.
The goal of the residency is to teach residents how to manage pharmacy services by applying a mix of traditional and innovative management theories to solve operational problems. Residents are assigned rotations with key pharmacy administrators in critical areas of the department. They are expected to operate in the same capacity as their preceptors by the end of the rotation. Any projects assigned to the resident are meant to be of great importance and significance to the department and will teach the resident important time management, communication, and project management skills. By the end of the year, residents are expected to be performing at the administrator level.
