Dr. Barry Wood is a private consulting nephrologist in Kansas City, Missouri, with a special interest in the management of hypertension.
As Lt. Colonel in the Air Force between 1978 and 1982, he was a consultant to the Surgeon General’s Office for hypertension and renal disease for the southeast United States.  He was Co-Director of the Kansas City Hypertension Clinical Trials Unit for more than 20 years, where as a primary investigator, he participated in phase III clinical trials involving most of the current antihypertensive agents introduced by the FDA over the past thirty years.  In 1999, he was elected by the American Society of Hypertension as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension.  He has served as Medical Director of the CME Department at Saint Luke’s Hospital and Program Director of both the Medical Grand Rounds Program at Saint Luke’s Hospital and the Greater Kansas City Hypertension Roundtable.  
In addition to his consultative practice at Saint Luke’s Hospital, he is a clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine where he has served as a member of  the Evaluation Council, the Honors Council, and the faculty promotion committee.  He is currently section head of Nephrology at Truman Medical Center, the teaching hospital of the UMKC School of Medicine.
Dr. Wood has been awarded numerous teaching awards including Teacher of the Year for the Department of Medicine at Truman Medical Center both in 1999, 2000 and 2002.  He is past president of the National Kidney Foundation Affiliate of Kansas and Western Missouri and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.  He was selected by his peers as Best Nephrologist in Kansas City for 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 and 2012 and Best Nephrologist in Kansas City for the Decade (1991-2000).  He has served as faculty on hypertension symposia in Turkey and Mexico internationally as well as many national panels.
He has authored numerous papers and a text chapter on hypertension, electrolyte disorders and kidney disease.  In his free time, he enjoys reading mystery novels, collecting dragons, gardening and spending time with his four grandchildren.
