Saint Luke’s News: Free Hepatitis C Screenings in July
Saint Luke’s Health System is offering free Hepatitis C screenings throughout the month of July at several locations across the Kansas City area.
Roughly 3.5 million Americans are living with Hepatitis C, according to the CDC. Hepatitis C is a disease that damages the liver. It is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is spread through direct contact with the blood of an infected person.
“According to U.S. government data, about 50 percent of people living with Hepatitis C are not aware they have the disease,” said Laura Alba, MD, a hepatologist with Saint Luke’s Liver & Transplant Specialists. “HCV is curable in almost 100 percent of cases, therefore it is very important to diagnose and treat the disease as early as possible.”
Adults born between 1945-1965 are more at risk of having the virus. Others who are at increased risk include veterans, anyone who has received a tattoo from an unlicensed source, those with a history of drug use, and recipients of donated blood, blood products, or organs before 1992. A simple finger-prick blood test can determine whether you have Hepatitis C. The test is confidential, and you’ll receive your results in just 20 minutes.
