Patient Story

A Place of Hope

Lori is living proof that cancer research and clinical trials are changing lives for patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Lori Voges was diagnosed with an aggressive form of metastatic breast cancer at age 43. The disease debilitated her body, forcing her to use a wheelchair to protect her weakened bones.

A trip to see Timothy Pluard, MD, changed her trajectory. Thanks to remarkable care and a successful treatment plan, Lori went from a wheelchair to a walker to walking independently in just 90 days. Lori turned 50 last year and has been able to witness so many important milestones for her family, including seeing her children graduate from high school.

For advanced breast cancer patients, reaching milestones such as birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries has an enormous and lifechanging effect on their lives. Saint Luke’s Hospital Koontz Center for Advanced Breast Cancer is one of the only centers in the United States dedicated solely to the comprehensive care of late-stage breast cancer. The Koontz Center creates a personalized and comprehensive plan for each patient, blending leading-edge genomics, scientific research, medical treatments, and clinical trials with the latest integrative therapies.

Metastatic breast cancer is cancer that has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body. While generally considered incurable, patients with advanced breast cancer are living much longer and fuller lives because of advances in treatment and management of the disease.

The majority of awareness and research dollars for breast cancer, however, is focused on early stage patients, ignoring a very important population—patients with metastatic breast cancer.
