Better KC: Saint Luke's helps patients with back pain with their Integrated Spine Program

December 12, 2019

Experts estimate that 80% of Americans will suffer from back and leg pain in their lifetime and it accounts for 264 million lost workdays a year.  For patients suffering from back pain finding the appropriate treatment option, like physical therapy, pain management, or surgery, can be a frustrating and time-consuming process.

Saint Luke’s Integrated Spine Program has a unique spine navigator who helps patients through the process and helps identify the best treatment options for them which allows the patient to become pain-free quicker.

Dr. Cheerag Upadhyaya, Director of Spine Surgery at Saint Luke’s Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute, talks with Better KC about the program, how spine surgery has changed over recent years and how our seven fellow-ship trained neurosurgeons help patients recover faster.

Spine and back surgery has changed so much – it is minimally invasive with a tiny incision, they are in-and-out quickly with faster recovery times. Saint Luke’s is the only place in Kansas City where a multidisciplinary spine team meets on a weekly basis to review the cases of back and neck pain patients. This team is made up of specialists who determine the next treatment for you.
