A New Life to Embrace
Andrew Widman was born with a congenital heart condition which, despite open heart surgery at 13 months old, made his three times the size of a normal heart. In 2017, Andrew’s heart started wearing out, and by age 41, his heart had enlarged to the point that it was pushing on his spine, lungs, and sternum. A referral to the heart transplant experts at the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute changed Andrew’s life.
The new heart he received at Saint Luke’s helped Andrew return to the life he loves. And having performed more than 800 transplants, we’re honored to have helped so many in Kansas City and the region get back to life’s most precious moments.
Since the Mid America Heart Institute opened its doors in 1981, our team of cardiologists, surgeons, and specialists have successfully delivered quality, comprehensive heart care to thousands in our community.
We’re proud to be the Midwest’s leading heart transplantation program. And this year, we were recognized by The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients as the second top heart transplant program in the country, based on experience, wait times, and post-transplant survival.
