While lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., a new report found more people are surviving the cancer than 10 years ago.

The report by the American Lung Association said nearly 22% of people are living five years past their diagnosis. That's a 26% improvement over the past decade, showing the significance of more lung cancer screenings and advancements in lung cancer research.

KCTV tells the story of Carol Meyers, a woman who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and is being treated at Saint Luke's.

Dr. Janakiraman Subramanian, an oncologist at Saint Luke's Cancer Institute, explains why it is often still caught in later stages.

Carol talks about how her diagnosis is not stopping her from living her normal life.

KCTV shows how Carol does not let her cancer define her.
